Russell Moffat is a civil law barrister with broad experience across the court system. He received the Sir Graham Day Prize in 1996 for company and commercial law and has since built a strong reputation at the Bar. His practice covers a large geographic area, and solicitors describe him as approachable and responsive.
He specialises in personal injury cases such as road-traffic collisions, fatal accidents, employers’ liability, occupiers’ liability and tripping claims, acting for both claimants and defendants. A significant portion of his work is paper-based, allowing him to turn around instructions quickly. Russell also handles housing disputes including possession, injunctions, anti-social behaviour and homelessness appeals, complex construction litigation drawing on his prior project-management experience, and commercial matters including employment, sale and supply of goods, and costs proceedings.
He is ranked as a Tier 2 leading junior in personal injury on the Wales and Chester circuit. Reviews praise his formidable advocacy, his ability to put clients at ease, and his pragmatic advice. Russell accepts Conditional Fee Agreement work and is qualified for public access instructions.
Andrew Garside is a civil law practitioner with more than three decades’ experience. He qualified as a solicitor in October 1993 and is a partner at C & G Solicitors in Capenhurst, Chester, as well as a director and compliance officer for Gemini Legal Ltd. Andrew is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and acts as an SRA-approved manager at his firm.
His practice centres on general litigation and personal injury. Clients instruct him for road-traffic accident claims, injury disputes and other civil matters. As both a partner and compliance lead, Andrew has a detailed understanding of legal processes and regulatory requirements. Colleagues note his straightforward, client-focused approach and his commitment to clear communication.
Andrew is permitted to practise law in England and Wales and is available to speak directly with clients. He offers guidance on funding options and pursues claims efficiently while maintaining high professional standards.
Steven Smith joined the Bar in 2011 after qualifying as a solicitor in 2005. He is authorised for direct access instructions and takes cases on a Conditional Fee Agreement basis. Steven has built a successful personal-injury practice that encompasses credit-hire litigation, personal-injury claims (including insurance-fraud allegations) and costs disputes.
He regularly conducts trials, applications, case-management conferences and appeals in the civil courts. He handles road-traffic accidents, employers’ liability and public-liability claims, often involving significant loss-of-earnings components. Steven is particularly known for low-velocity-impact cases.
His costs practice draws on years spent in a solicitor’s environment, giving him insight into budgeting, recoverability of additional liabilities, retainers, security for costs and solicitor–client assessments. He frequently advises solicitors and appears before the Senior Courts Costs Office, County Court and High Court. Steven represents major insurers and credit-hire organisations, is retained counsel for a PLC credit-hire company and advises at board level on policy and litigation strategy. Clients and colleagues describe him as robust yet friendly and value his practical, commercially minded guidance.
Ghazan Mahmood was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1997 and achieved top marks in his Bar School exams. He holds multiple scholarships, including the Sweet and Maxwell Law Prize and the Duke of Edinburgh Scholarship. With more than 25 years’ experience, he is widely recognised as a leading barrister in professional discipline, employment and commercial law.
Ghazan heads the Regulatory and Professional Discipline team at St John’s Buildings and previously led the Employment Group. He represents medical and dental professionals in regulatory and MHPS disputes and appears before Employment Tribunals, the General Medical Council, the General Dental Council and other fitness-to-practise committees. He is sought for complex employment and contractual disputes involving restrictive covenants, injunctions, bonus claims, whistle-blowing and discrimination. His practice also includes high-value commercial litigation.
He sits as a Deputy District Judge (since 2009) and is a member of the Employment Law Association. Ghazan previously taught contract law at Brunel University and advocacy at Manchester Metropolitan University and is accredited to accept instructions in the Dubai International Financial Centre. He is praised for his intelligence, strategic thinking, meticulous preparation and rapport with clients. He is recognised as a go-to advocate who brings calm authority to complex, high-stakes cases.
